IRS Wednesday Golf League Newsletter

Week 15 – August 5, 2015

Two more regular weeks and one position round remain and things are really heating up.

A Division still has Team Buescher in the lead with Team Zachritz moving within 50 points of them.  Team Kiffmeyer with assistance from Larry Oliver, moved up over Team Anderson, with both Kiffmeyer and Anderson teams close to a wild card spot if most of the rest of the league falters.

B Division still has Team Donlin in the lead with Team Pfeiffer still within striking distance, but not much time remains.  Team Freeman and Team Bramlage can only spoil someone else’s chances.

C Division has Team Leirey running away here and also moving into #1 Seed (but only by 3 ˝ points).  Team Schumacher brought in a ringer but couldn’t get his C & D players to do anything (small win and they move down to #6 Seed).  Talking with Captain Schu, if this was 1938 he would have had his C & D players executed.  Team Patmann is still within range for a wild card spot but there is not much time left.  Team Harms can only spoil someone’s chances here.

D Division has Team Flynn with a good win but moving down to #2 Seed (3 ˝ points down).  Team Kientz with a good win is now only 1 ˝ points away from a wild card spot.  Team Halpin threw in the towel (just couldn’t defeat Team Flynn) and the only thing they can do is try and spoil Team Kientz’ chances.  Team Breen – what can I say.  Update to this paragraph – Team Halpin lost due to Mr. Farlon Smith losing his glove.   Word just in shows where Col. Schu got his hands on Farlon’s glove and is only now ready to return it.  A little late Col. Schu, isn’t it (I wonder how much Team Flynn paid the Col. to do that).  I will report this to the league president.

Current seeding (with 3 weeks left, all inner division):

#1 Seed – Team Leirey, #2 Seed – Team Flynn, #3 Seed – Team Buescher, #4 Seed - Team Donlin, #5 Seed – Team Zachritz, #6 Seed – Team Schumacher.

This past week we had 6 subs.  Subs this week were Larry Oliver, Steve Ruehl, Dave Randle, Brian Smith, John Lloyd, and David Howell.

Good rounds this week were:  Front – Larry Oliver – 34 (1 under par), Tim Feldman – 39, and Steve Ruehl - 39.  Back – Garry Melish – 37, Don Potter – 39, and Tom Schumacher – 39.

Most under average at 5+ under average:  Mike Finn shoots 44 (5.1 under average), Larry Oliver  shoots 34 (7.2 under average), Ed Kiffmeyer shoots 42 (6.9 under average), Jay Broadus shoots 41 (5.2 under average), Jake Job-Rivera shoots 47 (6.1 under average), Mike Sullivan shoots 59 (5.3 under average), and Garry Melish shoots 37 (6.0 under average).

Gift match this week had to be the match between Team Anderson (was defending champs) and Team Zachritz (recently manure pitch forked).  Team Anderson gifted the match to Team Zachritz.  Team Anderson had their team shirts on inside-out which probably affected their match.  According to Mr. Mark Halpin he out drove Mr. Bill Zachritz on most drives by just using his 3 wood, but had no finish to his game.  Team Anderson is now hereby given the super smelly dirty manure covered pitch fork.  Looks like the Trophy will pass to another team this year.

League Outing Information:

Outing scheduled for September 11, with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

As always drinks on the course plus hot dogs/brats at the turn.  New caterer this year - dinner menu will be Steaks (grilled at the course) and Chicken, plus all the sides.

Cost will be:

Regulars – Golf Only – $55

Regulars – Golf and Dinner – $70

Subs/Guest – Golf Only – $65

Subs/Guest – Golf and Dinner – $80

Team Anderson needs a count for who will be playing and those having dinner.  Treasurer Chuck Reckers needs Outing payment by August 26 (Note:  Chuck will not cash the checks until the day before the Outing).   Credits from the rain-out can be applied to the Outing.

New this year will be separate Flights for Men & Women. Also separate Skins for Men & Women.  Greenies and Long Putt will remain combined.

Get the word out to your subs/guest so we can get a count on how many will be playing and having dinner.  Subs/Guest can have a team or individual and Team Anderson will place them on a team.

League Scramble will on September 2.  As of this publishing the format has not been finalized.  Scramble committee is Mike Donlin and Jim Westcott.  They will have something within the next few weeks.  Tee times will start at 2:54 p.m. thru 4:51 p.m. every 9 minutes.

And this coming from President Tom Schumacher (fourth installment):

WHAT ARE WE NOT KNOWN FOR(!)

Most US States have at least one claim to fame.  For example, 90% of Bourbon produced in the US comes from Kentucky.  In addition, each of the 50 states has something about it that is "lesser-known".  In the July 22nd Newsletter we published the third set of 10 states in alphabetical order.  Following are the fourth set of 10 states in alphabetical order.

New Mexico     Most wanted bank robbers (59).
New York       Smallest chapel in the US (28.7 sq. ft.).
North Carolina Highest rate of snake bites of any state.
North Dakota   No. 1 producer of honey.
Ohio           Most cursing by residents on customer-service calls.
Oklahoma       Most barbecue eateries per capita (2 per 10,000 people).
Oregon         Only state flag with different designs on the front and back.
Pennsylvania   Longest-running gas station (since 1909).
Rhode Island   First US circus performance.
South Carolina Most well-rested state.

Jim Bramlage informed me that he will be looking for a new regular for next year.  Joe Devereux will be leaving us at the end of the season.  He will be moving away to be closer to his kids.  I tried to talk him out of this since golf should be more important.  He informed me that where he is going he will be able to golf year round.  So wish him the best and hopefully he will get an Eagle one day.   If you know of anyone wishing to become a regular have them contact Jim Bramlage.

And this coming from Mark Halpin:  Mark created a FaceBook page for the Golf League.  This is a closed group that is open to all league members, subs, and potential subs.  Search for IRS Golf League California Golf Course and request to be added as a member.  This should be a good area to get information and look for a sub when needed.

Skins—Greenies—Long Putt

Most of the regulars and subs in the league know about Skins, Greenies, and Long Putt. For those that do not, each week there will be a sheet and a box on one of the tables in the clubhouse.  The sheet will have the names of all the regulars and blank lines at the bottom for subs to write in their names. $3.00 entry fee for Skins; $1.00 entry fee for Greenies; and $1.00 entry fee for Long Putt ($5.00 for all).  Place a check mark for each category for which you are participating.  If the Briefcase is not out notate on your scorecard your intent to play and pay when you complete your match.  First teams out please take the markers, last teams in please bring markers in.
