IRS Wednesday Golf League Newsletter

Week 14 – July 26, 2023

It is so amazing that Team Vaughn is unbeatable after 14 weeks.  Next 4 weeks they play teams in their division.  Maybe the Vacant team will be the stopper for them and if not, my thoughts are they will go all the way and even win the Championship.  Next 4 weeks for them is Team Brian Anderson, Team Snowden, Vacant Team, then position round.

Had a question about sand traps whether we play in them or not.  Per league rules we play in the traps and if you wish not to play in the traps it is best not to hit your ball into them.  Here is the League Rule that applies to the traps:  Article XX.  Course Rules:  Winter rules apply anywhere on the course, i.e., the ball may be moved to get on some grass or get it out of a divot.  If a ball comes to rest behind or in a tree, or under or in a bush or shrub, it may be declared not playable (Article XXIII is applicable).  If a ball comes to rest behind a tree, tree seedling, or shrub that is "staked" a free drop of two club lengths is allowed.  The key factor now is whether or not the tree, tree seedling, or bush is "staked".  New plants may be construed to be any that are "staked" regardless of whether they are shorter or taller than six feet.  If yes, then relief is permitted.  If no, either play the shot or declare it not playable.  In a sand trap, the ball may be taken out of footprints, standing water, etc., and placed on a flat surface (it is allowable to rake a spot in the trap to place the ball); however, it cannot be moved out of the trap.  (See Article XXI and XXIII for additional points of information on free drops vs. stroke penalties.

Best to consult with your opponent on any drops for best place to drop your ball to avoid any additional penalties.

Continuing reminder on the schedule containing two tee times for the teams versus the Vacant team.  All tee times following Team 12 on the regular schedule will be moved up one time earlier.  This will be posted on the website each week on the newsletter tab for the following week and will also be sent via e-mail.

DIVISION STANDINGS/SEEDING:

A Division has Team Kientz taking the lead and #4 Seed, with Team Crouch moving into 2nd (8.5 points off the lead) and Team Broadus dropping to 3rd (15 points from the lead).  Team Zachritz (Forked) brings in 4th and is only 61.5 points away from the lead.  Secretary thoughts are Team Zachritz (forked) will struggle to bring in a win versus their division rivals.

B Division has Team Flynn remaining in the lead and holding onto the #2 Seed.  Team Buescher moved up to 2nd and #5 Seed (34 points from lead), as Team Harms dropped to 3rd and #6 Seed (35.5 points off the lead).  Team Halpin (Forked) brings in 4th (117.5 points away from a wild card spot).

C Division has Team Bachmann remaining in the lead and #3 Seed.  Team Bramlage (Forked) in 2nd and Team Kiffmeyer (Forked) in 3rd (both are over 100 points away from lead in their division or for wild card).  Team Bill Anderson (Forked) comes in 4th (over 200+ points from lead and wild card) can maybe be a spoiler to the other teams in their division.

D Division has the unbeatable Team Vaughn in the lead and #1 Seed, and locked in for the division lead and possibly top Seed.  Team Brian Anderson (Forked) in 2nd (107 points from a wild card spot).  Team Snowden (Forked) in 3rd place can maybe be the team to take down Team Vaughn.

Beginning on August 2nd the rounds will be inner division which leaves A Division, B Division, and C Division having possible changes to their positions/wild card places.  With 4 weeks remaining there is the possibility of 360 points up for grabs.  Looking at Team Vaughn’s point average per week, they are at 66.5 points a week, which if they keep that pace they will surpass one thousand points next week and guarantee the #1 Seed.

Seeding summary:

#1 Seed – Team Vaughn

#2 Seed – Team Flynn

#3 Seed – Team Bachmann

#4 Seed – Team Kientz

This past week we had 8 subs playing:

Restricted sub:  Tom Berns (Team Vaughn) and Dave Martin (Team Flynn).

Subs:  Tom Schumacher (Team Bramlage), Blake Wartman (Team Bachmann), Mick McMullen (Team Flynn), Rick Floyd (Team Broadus), Brian Kelly (Team Brian Anderson), and Don Bazsika (Team Snowden).  Thanks for being there.

Team Zachritz played versus the Vacant Team 12 this week.  They pulled Team 4 out of the hat and scored their 4th win of the year.  For August 2nd Team Snowden plays versus the vacant team.  See League Secretary to pull your opponent out of the hat (Team 4, 8).

Question of the Very Weak:  Is it this or is it that? Which way or not?  When you take 3 steps back and 2 steps forward, repeat.  Where are you now?   Answers on page 6.

League Secretary Charles Halpin

Mr. Bill Z again tried to bribe the secretary to not give them a loss.  League secretary returned the favor by trying to bribe Mr. Bill with a pitcher of beer.  Sorry for your win Mr. Bill.

The Clubhouse remains safe to enter before & after your matches, plenty of refreshments, jokes, laughter, BS, and you never know who is buying the drinks.
