IRS Wednesday Golf League Newsletter

July 23, 2014

Another good week and the competition for the playoffs are beginning to heat up.

Again there were no changes to division leaders this week, just changes to seeds.  Team Zachritz maintained their lead in A Division and moved up to 2nd in the league.  Team Kiffmeyer stayed in the lead in B Division with Team Schumacher catching up to them.  Team Bramlage increased their lead in C Division and still holds league leading points.  Team Anderson (purple shirts) beat Team Kientz (red shirts) and held their lead in D Division but dropped to 3rd in the league with Team Leirey catching up to them.

Current Leaders:

A Division – Team Zachritz (2nd seed)

B Division – Team Kiffmeyer (4th seed)

C Division – Team Bramlage (1st seed)

D Division – Team Anderson (3rd seed)

Current Wildcards – Team Leirey (5th seed) & Team Harms (6th seed)

With four weeks of play left before the playoffs, all inner division, there seems to be a lot of competition to make it to the playoffs.

Status of the Fork:  A Division: seems fitting that Team Kientz got forked last week as they attempted this week to see if Red could beat Purple (purple shirts beats red shirts).  Team C.Halpin suffered a big loss and looks like the Fork is closing in on them (still can’t fork my team).  Defending League Champions Team Donlin is slowly falling out of seed position but is still a threat.  B Division: Team Schumacher has been motivated by the Fork as they moved closer to the top of B Division, but they remain Forked.  With that it seems like it is time to Fork Team Freeman and Team Kiffmeyer.  C Division:  Team Patmann still at the top of the upside down list but could be a spoiler in the next few weeks.  Team Flynn is seeing their hopes fade and is closing in on the Fork.  D Division:  Team Harms with the fear of the Fork pulled out a big win and saved themselves from the fork and moved into a seed position.  Team Pfeiffer finally found the Fork this week.  Summary of Teams Forked:  Team Schumacher (week 8), Team Patmann (week 10), Team Kientz (week 12), Team Breen (week 13), Team Freeman (week 14), Team Kiffmeyer (week 14), Team Pfeiffer (week 14).

There were 4 subs this week.  Subs were Dan Varndell, E. John Thomas, Dave Crowell, and Eddie Gregory.  Thanks for being there.

Here is something I received via e-mail

An interesting fact:

Manure: In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything for export had to be transported by ship. It was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers, so large shipments of manure were quite common.
It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it become heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!

Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening

After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction ' Stow high in transit ' on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this "volatile" cargo and start the production of methane.

Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T. , (Stow High In Transit) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.

You probably did not know the true history of this word.
Neither did I.
I had always thought it was a golf term...

Congratulations to Frank Leirey on his retirement.  Please stop by next Tuesday, July 29, to Open House for Frank, at the Federal Office Building, Room 4519, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.  If you would like to send Frank a message, send to NTEUCH9@yahoo.com.

Skins—Greenies—Long Putt

Most of the regulars and subs in the league know about Skins, Greenies, and Long Putt. For those that do not, each week there will be a sheet and a box on one of the tables in the clubhouse.  The sheet will have the names of all the regulars and blank lines at the bottom for subs to write in their names. $3.00 entry fee for Skins; $1.00 entry fee for Greenies and $1.00 entry fee for Long Putt.  Place a check mark for each category for which you are participating.  If the Briefcase is not out notate on your scorecard your intent to play and pay when you complete your match.  First teams out please take the markers, last teams please bring markers in.
