IRS Wednesday Golf League Newsletter

Week 9 – June 13, 2018

Reminder that 2nd half green fees/dues are due by June 27.  Pouches will be in the briefcase this coming week to put remittance in.  Make checks payable to IRS Golf League.

For the skeptics on delays due to the road construction on 275:  It only took Mr. Fredrickson a long time to get to the course (at his age he was driving as fast as 5 mph).  On the Kentucky side they put in a lane switch in the medium, so they will soon be changing lane directions.  Mr. Kiff expects this to happen around July 4th.  From the Kentucky side going into Ohio the bridge is already down to two lanes, so the accidents should be coming soon.

Subs this week were:  Jim Conrady (Team Leirey) and Mike Schwarberg (Team Kientz).  Thanks for being there.

Division Standings (Final play between Division A vs. Division C; Division B vs. Division D):

Division A has no change is positions as Team Anderson (#3 Seed) is still in the lead followed by Team Bramlage, Team Kientz, and Team Leirey.  (1st to 4th now separated by 83.0 points.)

Division B has Team Slye (#4 Seed) taking the lead away from Team Kiffmeyer while Team Vaughn moves up to 3rd as Team Harms falls to 4th.  (63.0 points separate 1st to 4th.)

Division C has no changes with Team Schumacher (#1 Seed) (and 1st Team to break 500) still in the lead, followed by Team Flynn (#5 Seed), Team Halpin (falling fast), and Team Pfeiffer (another win).  (172 points separate 1st to 4th.)

Division D has Team Freeman (#2 Seed) still firmly holding their lead, followed by Team Buescher (#6 Seed), Team Breen, and Team Patmann.  (Now 96.5 points separate 1st to 4th.)

Next week starts Division A vs Division D, and Division B vs Division C play.

Status of the Almighty Fork:

In Week 8 I had Team Leirey, Team Patmann, Team Pfeiffer, and Team Vaughn on the verge of being Forked and they all managed to bring in a win to keep the Fork away from them for at least another week.  Now being added to the almost Forked is Team Harms, Team Halpin, and Team Breen.  Next week will see a team Forked.  (Who will it be!!!).

League President (Col. Tom Schumacher) Questions for the Weak.

(Col. Tom had the following questions on Military History.)  (All questions were either True or False.)  Answer are below.

There were only 5 who responsed to the questions with no one getting all questions correct.  Jim Bramlage managed to get 6 correct, while the others that responded got 5 correct.

Question #1 – President Theodore Roosevelt was the only U.S. President to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

·        True.  President Roosevelt was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service as a U.S. Army Colonel in the Spanish-American War.  He is the only U.S. President to ever receive this honor.

Question #2 – The head of the eagle on the Navy’s emblem has always been turned to the right.

·        False.  Until 1941, the eagle on the Navy crest had faced left.  It was changed in accordance with heraldic tradition in which the right side represents honor and the left dishonor.

Question #3 – The U.S. formed an aeronautical division (a precursor to today’s Air Force) only three and a half years after the Wright brothers flew the world’s first airplane at Kitty Hawk in 1903.

·        True.  The U.S. Army Signal Corps created an aeronautical division on August 1, 1907.  This later became the Air Force we know today.

Question #4 – The line in the Marines’ Hymn “From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli” refers to the Battle of Derne in 1805.  The Marines have not returned to Tripoli since.

·        False.  In 2011, Marine troops returned to Tripoli in order to prevent Muammar Gaddafi’s forces from performing air strikes on Libyan rebels.  This mission was named Operation Odyssey Dawn.

Question #5 – The U.S.S. Triton SSRN-586 became the first vessel to make a complete submerged circumnavigation of the world.

·        True.  In 1960, the U.S.S. Triton SSRN-586, powered by two nuclear reactors, completed the first submerged trip around the globe.

Question #6 – The U.S. Army was the branch of the military first assigned the task of exploring and mapping the United States.

·        True.  The Lewis and Clark Expedition was organized by the United States Army.

Question #7 – In 1868, the famous Eagle Globe Anchor insignia became the official emblem of the U.S. Marines.

·        False.  Since 1868, the Eagle Globe Anchor insignia has been part of the Marines’ uniforms, but didn’t become their official emblem until 1955.

Question #8 – Armed Forces memorabilia is more popular now than ever.

·        True.  There are over 20 million veterans living in the U.S. today, and an unprecedented number of enthusiasts who show their pride through memorabilia, apparel, and jewelry.

 Heard in the Clubhouse:

·        Word has it that Jim Hill has been spending too much time in the gym.  Or has he been taking too much steroids.  He hit his tee shot on #5 so hard that his clubhead separated from the shaft…Callaway 9 iron.  In a separate incident – Jim Hill hit the secretary on the putting green, witnessed by John Freeman.  John Freeman recommend the secretary find a good lawyer, we couldn’t find any on the putting green.

·        Chris Kerns collecting Kelly Johnson prior weeks winnings: “Kelly won more in one week than I won total in 2 years.”

·        One of our female golfers (no name mentioned here): “I don’t like playing with men’s balls.” Secretary got clarification on this: golf balls?

Most of the regulars and subs in the league know about Skins, Greenies, and Long Putt. For those that do not, each week there will be a sheet and a box on one of the tables in the clubhouse.  The sheet will have the names of all the regulars and blank lines at the bottom for subs to write in their names. $3.00 entry fee for Skins; $1.00 entry fee for Greenies and $1.00 entry fee for Long Putt.  Place a check mark or X for each category for which you are participating.  If the Briefcase is not out, notate on your scorecard your intent to play and pay when you complete your match.  First teams out please take the markers, last teams in please bring markers in.
