IRS Wednesday Golf League Newsletter

June 18, 2014

This week saw some hot weather and some hot players.

There were 11 Birdies this week and one Eagle.  Mark Halpin Eagled #1 with a 95 yard shot from the #9 fairway.  This was Mark’s 1st Eagle so he gets a big CONGRATULATIONS.

Some of the good rounds shot were:  Front nine – Bill Holocher (37), Jay Ackerman (38), and Tom Schumacher (39); and Back nine – Clayton Doty (37) and Donna Caporale (39).

A couple of records were also broken this week.  Undefeated Team Anderson faced no win Team Freeman.   Team Anderson’s shirts and Mark Halpin’s Eagle did not faze Team Freeman.  Team Anderson took their 1st loss and Team Freeman took their 1st win.  I did notice that Team Anderson was leaving with different Team colors for next week.

Division leaders are:

A Division – Team Donlin (with Team C.Halpin and Team Zachritz closing in),

B Division – Team Kiffmeyer (takes the lead away from Team Breen),

C Division – Team Bunkelman (still hanging in there),

D Division – Team Anderson (with Team Leirey closing in).

Team Schumacher suffered through with a win, but remained Forked.  Team Freeman saved themselves from the Fork for another week and Team Patmann is on thin ice with the Fork closing in on them.

We had 6 subs this past week.  Subs were Bill Holocher, Dave Vincent, Mike Schwarberg, Clayton Doty, Dan Varndell, and Jeff Witt.  Thanks for being there.

I did want to mention about found balls on the course.  It is almost every week I hear of someone saying they could not find their ball on the course and a couple of instances of someone coming up later and saying they found that ball and picked it up.  Please be courteous to others on the course and when you find a ball on or near your fairway that is not yours please do not pick it up.  If you need more balls I always carry extras in my bag and am willing to share one.  Also if you find one in the woods that one would be okay to keep.

"Thoughts of the Weak" (from League President Thomas G. Schumacher)

Tom said something about “a person has few ounces of it and not even the strongest person can hold it for more than a minute.”  Tom was supposed to give me the correct wording and the answer will be here next week.

And one final item.  While serving overseas I remember almost everyday on Armed Forces Radio & Television Service (AFRTS) a program by Paul Harvey called “Thoughts to Ponder.”  This always brought me some sensibility to the daily chaos.  So here is my segment of:

Thoughts to Ponder

(Note, I received this via an e-mail over the winter and think it applies to our league.)

PGA Rule Changes for Seniors

Rule 1.a.5

A ball sliced or hooked into the rough shall be lifted and placed on the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled into the rough with no penalty.

The senior should not be penalized for tall grass which ground keepers failed to mow.

Rule 2.d.6 (B)

A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game.

The Senior Player must estimate the distance the ball would have traveled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there.

Rule 3.B.3(G)

There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, making it a stolen ball.

The player is not to compound the felony by charging himself or herself with a penalty.

Rule 4.c.7(h)

If a putt passes over the hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity supersedes the Rules of Golf.

Rule 5.f.3(y)

Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be blown in, may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the hole.

No one wants to make a travesty of the game.

Rule 6.a.9(k)

There is no penalty for so-called "out of bounds." If penny-pinching golf course owners had bought sufficient land, this would not occur.

The senior golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty.

Rule 7.G.15(z)

There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. Senior golfers should not be penalized for manufacturers' shortcomings.

Rule 8.k.9( S)

Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new golf equipment.

Since this is financially impractical for many senior golfers, one-half stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.

Hope that brightens your day.

Skins—Greenies—Long Putt

Most of the regulars and subs in the league know about Skins, Greenies, and Long Putt. For those that do not, each week there will be a sheet and a box on one of the tables in the clubhouse.  The sheet will have the names of all the regulars and blank lines at the bottom for subs to write in their names. $3.00 entry fee for Skins; $1.00 entry fee for Greenies and $1.00 entry fee for Long Putt.  Place a check mark for each category for which you are participating.  If the Briefcase is not out notate on your scorecard your intent to play and pay when you complete your match.  First teams out please take the markers, last teams please bring markers in.
