IRS Wednesday Golf League Newsletter

Week 7 – June 8, 2016

Congratulations to Charlie Patmann for his Hole-in-One on #5 par 3.  Course management was spreading the word around the course letting everyone know.  Then with that congratulations go to Mike Breen who got an Eagle on the par 4 #3.  Mike was in the Skins game and won the Eagle Pot. Talking with Mike, this was his first Eagle, as he has only been playing for about 4 years.

It was good seeing Mr. Ed Kiffmeyer at the clubhouse.  Glad he could make it and hope he gets out again before his surgery.  His team really needs his support.

This week we had 15 subs:  Larry Oliver & Izzy Jewell (for Team Kiffmeyer), Jo Diehl (for Team Patmann), Jeff Witt (for Team Buescher), Greg Arkle, Shari Anderson, and new sub Jennifer Petit (for Team Harms), Bob Kendrach (for Team Halpin), Chet Wiggins & Will Freeman (for Team Zachritz), Dave Martin (for Team Flynn), Mike Schwarberg (for Team Kientz), Steve Ruehl & Dave Vincent (for Team Donlin), and Melody Oswalt (for Team Leirey).

Good rounds this week:  Front 9 – Greg Arkle – 38; Back 9 – Tom Schumacher – 38.

A Division saw defending Champs Team Schumacher losing more steam.  It looks like they may have come out of the gate to fast as the division is tightening up on the top 3.  Except for Team Donlin, but then maybe they are waiting for the home stretch to make their move.

B Division has my team, Team Halpin, still in the lead.  We suffered our worse loss of the season but then that was against Team Breen and Mike Breen’s Eagle.  Team Breen scored more points against us then I think they scored all last year.  Hope that doesn’t take the wind out of our sail.  Team Harms pulled out another good win and is moving closer up.  Team Kiffmeyer (without Ed) is struggling along and Team Buescher is ever falling further back and may get the Fork by next week.

C Division has Team Zachritz and Team Kientz only 10.5 points apart.  Team Bramlage is barely holding on and Team Freeman is falling ever so gradually.

D Division has Team Patmann with a commanding lead thanks to Charlie Patmann’s Hole-in-One.  Team Breen after their big win is moving up and closing in.  Talk has it they will bring in Dave Spaeth next week, so watch out for them.  Team Anderson (the Shirts) even with a win fell to third.  Team Pfeiffer took another loss and have moved themselves to the top of the upside down list and are officially forked.

Status of the almighty Fork (and we are not even half way yet):  Team Anderson – week 5.  Team Pfeiffer – week 7. On final notice - Team Buescher since they still might have a chance (???).

Again another reminder to be on or very near the tee box ahead of your tee time so as to not delay teeing off.  Course management is still getting on us about slow play.  Remember there is a league behind us.

Heard around the clubhouse:

The Breen twins (no they are not twins) were talking and Mr. Pat Breen started talking about 1963 when the league first started.  Seems Pat has seen a lot at the course, and then it was a different building, but then next week will have Dave Spaeth (Pops) there to continue the conversation.

Then Mr. Mike Breen was explaining how he managed his Eagle.  With a long way into #3 he was at first going to use a soft 4 iron then changed his mind to a strong 5 iron.  He used a baseball swing, hit it well, but didn’t get to see the ball go in the hole.  Didn’t know he had the Eagle until their group got up to the green and his ball wasn’t there, then his opponent found it in the hole.  Not bad for only 4 years of playing golf.

Then there was me, making the long putt on #9 & Birdie, and getting asked how did I do that. Well my answer was easy.  After making my first putt attempt on #1 I continued #2 through #8 with 2 to 3 putts on each hole (didn’t want to waste any more good putts) as practice until I got to #9.  It seemed to work even though I lost my match (I did win #9 hole).  Brilliant wasn’t I???

Skins—Greenies—Long Putt

Most of the regulars and subs in the league know about Skins, Greenies, and Long Putt.  For those that do not, each week there will be a sheet and a box on one of the tables in the clubhouse.  The sheet will have the names of all the regulars and blank lines at the bottom for subs to write in their names.  $5.00 entry fee for all games ($3.00 entry fee for Skins; $1.00 entry fee for Greenies and $1.00 entry fee for Long Putt).  Place a check mark for each category for which you are participating.  If the Briefcase is not out notate on your scorecard your intent to play and pay when you complete your match.  First teams out please take the markers, last teams in please bring markers in.

Candidate Teams for League Secretary 2017: Team Pfeiffer & Team Zachritz.
