IRS Wednesday Golf League Newsletter
Week 3 – May 10, 2017
Week
3 complete and still having good weather for golf.
Course was slow play again this week.
Reminder to pick up the pace on the course as there is another league
after ours.
We
had 7 subs this week. Subs were: Cindy Ellsworth (Team Buescher), Steve Ruehl
(Team Bramlage), Don Bazsika (Team Bramlage), Johnny Lloyd (Team Kientz), Mary Jo Leirey (Team Freeman). New subs:
Jack Snowden (Team Pfeiffer), Don Iannelli
(Team Flynn). Thanks for being there.
Good
rounds this week were: front nine – Jim
Westcott – 39; back nine – Mark Slye – 37 and Ray Vaughn – 39 (2 Birdies).
I
am at a loss for words this week as it seems the Shirts had no mercy on their
opponents. Thought they would take a
fall if offered free beer but they chose a win over free beer. What was I thinking? Along with that Team Anderson took a half
point lead in the #1 seed.
Only
one team remains unbeaten. Team Kientz
your day will come.
Division
Leaders: A Division still has defending
Champs Team Bramlage in the lead; B Division has Team Kientz taking the lead; C
Division has Team Anderson (the shirts) still leading; and D Division still has
Team Halpin in the lead.
For
those liking statistics and percentages (I did this last year) here are some
numbers to ponder: Only 50% of the 16 teams this week won their match. Of those teams only 32 of the 64 players won
their match.
Still
no Fork for any teams yet, however Team Schumacher may be the first to get Forked. Any questions
or complaints on this should be taken to the Complaint Committee Mr. Bill
Zachritz.
From the League Rules (hopefully to speed up play):
Article IX. Missing Tee Off Times: A player must be on the tee ready to play at
the scheduled starting time or a forfeiture is
declared. If there is a back up at the
tee and starting times are delayed, there is no forfeiture if the player is
ready to play at the delayed starting time.
In all situations players must follow the instructions of the
starter. If the player misses the
scheduled starting time, but joins the group on the course, the tardy player
forfeits nine medal points and match points for hole(s) not played. The team forfeits four (4) team medal points. The tardy player will continue to play for
match points for the remaining holes. If
any holes were handicap holes these handicap strokes will be forfeited. The total handicap strokes for the nine would
also be reduced.
Article XVI. Pickup Rule:
Once a player has recorded a score on a hole twice par plus one, they
must stop playing that hole and pick up their ball. On a par 3 the most strokes allowed are seven
(7), on a par 4 the number is nine (9), and on a par 5 no more than eleven
(11). The recorded score will be either the 7, 9, or 11 as appropriate. The player's opponent is required to finish
the hole unless they also reach the pickup score. Any player who picks up before holing out
cannot win a match point for that hole, regardless of handicap strokes. If opponent also picks up on the hole, the
match point will be split. It is
therefore in the best interest of a player to attempt to finish the hole. This rule has no effect on any medal contest
or recorded score for handicap purposes.
The rule was instituted to improve play and speed up the total game.
Article XXV. Putting Recommendations and Penalties: Continuous putting is a courtesy not an
infringement and helps speed up play. It
is recommended and strongly encouraged that all players attempt to comply. A putting ball may be used on greens.
A ball may not be changed at any other time except with your
opponent’s permission.
A ball hitting the pin when shooting from outside the green does
not result in a penalty. However, there
is a one-stroke penalty for both match and medal play purposes, for hitting the
pin while playing from a point anywhere on the putting surface.
Words of Whizdumb from Mr. Feldman:
A
Neil deGrasse Tyson Thought: When we are at a tied Major League baseball
game and rooting for the hometown team to score a walk-off win, we tend to
cheer very loudly while our hometown heroes are trying to concentrate, focus
and bat during the bottom of the ninth. They are attempting to swing a
cylindrical bat in such a way that it contacts a small sphere which is
traveling at over 90 miles per hour, and moving on a curved path through the
air, and to have the middle of the bat strike the ball at its equator. This is
a Herculean challenge. Meanwhile, when we are at a golf tournament and
following and rooting for a particular PGA player, we give them absolute
silence when they are attempting to concentrate and tee off. Is this silence
really necessary when the ball which they are trying to hit is absolutely
motionless, sitting on top of a pedestal, just waiting to be struck, and is far
smaller than the monstrous club head which they are swinging? I think not. This
disparity in fan behaviors at baseball vs. golf events makes absolutely no
sense from a physics challenge standpoint.

Skins—Greenies—Long Putt
Most of the regulars and subs in the
league know about Skins, Greenies, and Long Putt. For
those that do not, each week there will be a sheet and a box on one of the
tables in the clubhouse.
The
sheet will have the names of all the regulars and blank lines at the bottom for
subs to write in their names.
$3.00 entry fee for Skins; $1.00 entry fee for Greenies and
$1.00 entry fee for Long Putt. Place
a check mark for each category for which you are participating. If the Briefcase is not out notate on your
scorecard your intent to play and pay when you complete your match. First teams out please take the markers, last
teams in please bring markers in.
